Meade School District Veterans Day Events

In observance of Veterans Day, schools in Meade School District will be holding special activities, programs and assemblies to thank and honor those who have served or who are serving in the military.  Throughout the entire week, students will participate in which classroom projects throughout the entire week focusing on veterans.

 

Sturgis Intermediate and Sturgis Williams Middle School students will kick-off their Veterans Day programs on Tuesday, November 7.  All staff and students will be going to Ft. Meade for the day to experience “A Day in the Life of a Soldier”   Boot Camp.  Students are placed in platoons and drill sergeants meet them to march them through several different stations at Ft Meade.   Those stations consist of PT, an obstacle course, tasting MRE meals, throwing grenades, using GPS, and several other events based on a life of a soldier.  On Friday, November 10, veterans will be speaking in the classroom from 1:00 – 1:45.  An assembly, honoring ALL veterans, will be held at 2:00 p.m. in the Grunwald Gym.  Honorees this year are the Vietnam veterans. 

 

On Friday, November 10, Piedmont Valley Elementary will be hosting their annual Veterans Day program in the multi-purpose room.  This wonderful event will occur from 8:30 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. and will include musical selections from the students, a PowerPoint presentation, as well as guest speaker, Command Sergeant Major (R) Cal Christensen.  Sergeant Major (R) Christensen has had a decorated career in the military.  His awards include the Legion of Merit Award, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal (3rd Award), Army Achievement Award (6th Award), Army Superior Unit Award, Army Good Conduct Medal (8th Award), National Defense Service Medal (2nd Award), Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, and the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal. In addition to the musical program, throughout the week, students will do a number of activities, which include, essay and poem contest writings, historical lessons, art projects, and letters of thanks sent to veterans and soldiers from the students at Piedmont Valley Elementary.

 

Sturgis Elementary will have a kindergarten through second grade Veterans Day program from 8:30 a.m. until 9:00 a.m., with a flag raising ceremony afterwards at 9:00 a.m.  Grades third through fourth will a Veteran’s Day program starting with the flag raising ceremony at 9:00 a.m., with the program to follow.  Both programs will be in the school gym.

 

Whitewood Elementary will present a Veterans Day program beginning at 9:00 a.m. until 9:30 a.m.in the school gym.  Students will sing patriotic songs, recite patriotic thoughts, and recognize all veterans in attendance.

 

In honor of Veterans Day, Sturgis Brown High School will be having a recognition ceremony at 1:15 p.m. in the West Gym. The ceremony will include musical numbers performed by the SBHS Band and Choir. Staff members who are Veterans and our family members who have served their country. Members of the community and families of students and staff are invited to attend.

A field trip to the Air and Space Museum at Ellsworth AFB is planned for the students at the Atall School on Friday, November 10.    After the Air and Space Museum, students will then visit the Rapid City Post Office to watch care packages be processed and sent to military personnel overseas.

 

Students, fourth through eighth grade, at Enning-Union Center will host a Veterans’ Tribute on Monday, November 13 at 10:00 a.m. at the Union Center Baptist Church.  Students will be sending handmade cards to the veterans at Ft. Meade.
