School board election

Petitions for school board vacancies for the 2024-25 school year can start being circulated on March 1, 2024 for the June 4, 2024 election. The three 3-year terms that are ending are Charlie Wheeler, Terry Koontz, Aaron Odegaard and the one 2-year term is Brian Voight.

To serve as a member of the Meade School District 46-1's school board, it is required that you reside within the boundaries of the Meade School District 46-1. Given Meade County's extensive area and the proximity of its school district boundaries to those of neighboring districts, residents frequently face confusion regarding their exact district affiliation.

Petitions

Petitions will be available for the public to stop and pick up or obtain online at the SD Secretary of State website. They may be filed in the office of the business manager located in the Williams Administrative Building at 1230 Douglas Street, Sturgis SD between the hours of 7:30 am - 4:00 pm and no later than March 26, 2024 by 5:00 pm .

Voter Registration

You may register to vote in the annual election by completing a voter registration form and returning it to your county auditor.

Absentee Voting

If you are unable to cast a ballot on Election Day, you may be eligible to vote by absentee ballot. To vote by absentee ballot, a voter must request an absentee ballot application from the county in which they reside.  

Registered voters can vote in-person prior to election day by bringing along a valid photo identification card (ID), such as a driver’s license, tribal photo ID, local high school ID, college or university ID from a South Dakota institution, or a passport or other federal government-issued ID. If a voter does not have a photo ID, they must sign a personal identification affidavit and will vote on a regular ballot.

In-Person Absentee Voting

To absentee vote in-person, voters that live in Meade County will cast their vote at the Meade County Auditor’s office. Lawrence County residents that reside in the Meade School District will absentee vote in-person at the Meade School District business office.

The voter will present an acceptable form of identification

  • SD Driver License or nondriver ID card

  • US Government photo ID (passport, military, VA, FBI, Secret Service, IRS, etc)

  • Tribal photo id

  • A current student id issued from a SD high school or SD accredited institution of higher learning

Absentee Voting by Mail

An absentee ballot may be mailed to a registered voter of the Meade School District 46-1 by sending an absentee ballot application to the county auditor’s office. The auditors will forward the request to the school district.
