This week, Lauren Jahn accepted a Chess in Education award through the Chess in the Schools community at the Marshall Chess Club in New York City. Andy Lerner Excellence in Chess Education yielded dozens of facilitators of Chess Education; multiple grandmasters were in attendance.
Mrs. Jahn was nominated through Chess Club participants and Scooper Time students. Predominantly, this recognition and agency focuses on urban populations and promotion of high level Chess competitions. Mrs. Jahn was hand selected for the innovation and recency of her club especially as it is hosted on a volunteer basis. Overall, more than fifty Sturgis Scoopers have joined and played in the Chess Club. Mrs. Jahn made it to 3rd place in this nationwide competition– earning $1,000 for the Sturgis Brown Chess Club. There were also many networking opportunities to blend Chess Clubs nationwide.
Historically, Sturgis Brown Chess Club is in its fourth year. Competitions are on a biannual basis, and the Club is always recruiting. The next school year will focus heavily on recruitment, sustainability, and travel as we consider this momentous contribution from Andy Lerner.
